The Founder

Dr. Ian Mayfield

The American Psychic Association was founded in 1995 in Cleveland, Ohio, on the initiative of Dr. Ian Mayfield. A renowned Professor of psychic and occult studies, Mayfield found it difficult to maintain support because of his involvement in such a controversial field of study. Luckily, Mayfield possessed the resources to be his own backer in thanks to his inheritance from his father; Milton Mayfield who was the former President and CEO of Henries & Owen Co., which was a billion dollar manufacturing company.

Joined by renowned advocates of paranormal and psychic activities, Profs. Stanley Murray, Mina Fullerton, Edward Glass, and Dr. Christopher Sanchez, Mayfield was able to get his research off the ground and the APA began a variety of investigations to credit the legitimacy of the field within less than a year of launching.

Under Mayfield’s leadership, by the start of the new millennium the APA became one of the most stable organizations in American psychic research and the organizational home of many leading people in the field, including Gertrude Gellar, Phoebe White, and Carl Young. Publication of the APA's Journal and Newsletter commenced in 2005 and have remained in publication without interruption. Since 2010, the APA has grown to house laboratories and offices, and become home to a unique library and archives. The resources include over 10,000 volumes, over 300 periodicals, and publications in over 14 languages. Rare books, case reports, letters and manuscripts, with some material dating back to the 18th century.
